Uhtred, the Saxon-born warrior raised by Danes, finds himself in a precarious position in Episode 2 of The Last Kingdom Season 2. After returning to his childhood home of Bebbanburg to challenge his traitorous uncle for the throne, Uhtred is captured and taken prisoner by the new lord of the castle.
Meanwhile, King Alfred of Wessex is facing a rebellion led by the charismatic Viking Ragnor the Younger. Forced to seek help from his Viking allies, Uhtred's former comrades-in-arms, Alfred sends his trusted advisor, Father Beocca, to negotiate with the Viking leaders.
As Uhtred languishes in captivity, he is approached by a mysterious woman named Gisela, who claims to be his cousin and offers to help him escape. Uhtred is skeptical of her motivations, but is desperate to regain his freedom and return to the fight against Alfred's enemies.
Back in Wessex, Beocca strikes a tentative agreement with the Viking leaders, but is ambushed by Ragnor's forces on the way back to the King's camp. Beocca manages to escape with his life, but is forced to abandon his hostage, Ragnor's son, in the process.
As tensions rise between the Saxons and the Vikings, Uhtred manages to escape from Bebbanburg with Gisela's assistance. But their freedom is short-lived, as they are soon ambushed by a group of Dane raiders. Uhtred is badly injured in the ensuing fight, and Gisela is captured by the Vikings.
In the final moments of the episode, Uhtred must confront his own mortality and make a decision about his allegiance in the ongoing conflict between the Saxons and the Vikings. Will he remain loyal to Alfred and his fellow Saxons, or will he choose to join forces with his former Viking comrades once again?
