The Larkins is a British comedy drama series that premiered on Acorn TV in 2021. The show is a modern reimagining of the classic 1950s sitcom The Darling Buds of May and follows the lives of the Larkins, a family living in rural Kent. Set in the present day, The Larkins follows the chaotic and charming lives of the titular family, headed by patriarch Pop Larkin (Bradley Walsh) and his wife Ma Larkin (Joanna Scanlan). Pop is a free-spirited, larger-than-life character who runs a successful fruit and vegetable farm, while Ma is the heart and soul of the family, keeping everyone in check with her no-nonsense approach to life.
Joining Pop and Ma in the Larkin household are their six children - Mariette, Zinnia, Petunia, Primrose, Victoria, and Montgomery - as well as the family's loyal dog, Boycie. The Larkins are a tight-knit group who love nothing more than spending time together, whether that's farming, picnicking or just enjoying each other's company.
However, their idyllic existence is thrown into chaos when tax inspector Cedric Charlie (Robert Bathurst) arrives on the scene. Cedric is tasked with investigating the Larkin family's finances and ensuring that they are paying their fair share of taxes. Initially, Cedric struggles to get to grips with the Larkin way of life, but as he spends more time with the family, he begins to see the appeal of their simple, carefree existence.
Throughout the series, we see the Larkins facing a variety of challenges, from family dramas to unexpected financial difficulties. We also witness their enduring love and support for one another, as they navigate the highs and lows of life in their own unique way.
The Larkins is a heartwarming and humorous look at life in rural Britain, filled with colorful characters and plenty of laughs. The show is beautifully shot, with stunning countryside vistas and a warm, inviting aesthetic that perfectly captures the spirit of the Larkin family.
Bradley Walsh and Joanna Scanlan deliver standout performances as Pop and Ma Larkin, imbuing their characters with warmth, humor, and a genuine sense of love for one another. Their onscreen chemistry is a joy to watch, and they make a truly lovable and endearing couple.
The supporting cast is equally impressive, with each of the Larkin children bringing their own unique personalities and quirks to the table. From the feisty Mariette to the dreamy Petunia, each character has their moment in the spotlight and adds to the overall warmth and charm of the show.
Overall, The Larkins is a delightful and feel-good series that is sure to put a smile on your face. It's a celebration of family, love, and the simple things in life, and a reminder that sometimes the most important thing in the world is the people you share it with.
