Doug and Carrie are in the market for a new apartment after deciding they need more space. Doug is eager to purchase a place with a pool table while Carrie is focused on finding a place with a bigger closet. They finally find the perfect apartment, but there's just one catch – the price tag is a little out of their budget.
In order to afford the apartment, they decide to rent out their spare room to a new roommate, a young woman named Holly, who is studying to become a hairdresser. At first, things seem to be working out great – Holly is friendly and helpful around the house. But then, Carrie begins to notice that Holly is using up all of their shampoo and conditioner, and soon, all of their other beauty products disappear as well.
Doug doesn't think it's a big deal, but when Carrie confronts Holly about it, she finds out that Holly has been using their products on her clients as a way to save money. Carrie is furious, but Doug decides to take Holly's side. He believes that Holly is just trying to make a living, and he doesn't want to upset their new tenant and risk losing the extra income.
Meanwhile, Arthur is running a covert business out of the basement. He's been selling off his old belongings online, but when Doug finds out he's been using their address as the return address, he puts a stop to it. Arthur is dismayed, but Doug assures him that he's just trying to protect their privacy.
As the episode progresses, tensions mount between Carrie and Holly. Carrie is annoyed by Holly's constant use of their products, and Holly feels like Carrie is always on her case. Things come to a head when Holly accidentally locks herself out of their apartment and Carrie refuses to let her back in until she starts buying her own products.
In the end, Doug intervenes and convinces both women to compromise. They agree to split the cost of a few new bottles of shampoo and conditioner, and Holly promises to buy her own beauty products from now on. Doug also decides to let Arthur continue with his online business, as long as he starts using a P.O. Box as the return address.
