Ep 4. The Jungle Law

Mowgli is an orphaned human boy who was raised by a pack of wolves in the jungle. In episode 4 of season 1, he learns about the Jungle Law, a set of rules and expectations that all creatures living in the jungle must follow.

Mowgli has always been willful and independent, chafing against the authority of his wolf family and resistive to being tamed by human norms. When he realizes that the Wolf Council is going to hold a meeting to determine if he can remain in the pack, he feels betrayed and resentful. He didn't see any need for their meeting and didn't think that anyone, especially members who aren't okay with his presence, could act for him, except Bagheera, a wise and revered panther. In realizing that, he once again wishes to leave the wolf pack and live on his own.

In order to prove his worth and loyalty to the pack, Mowgli sets out to obtain a tooth from the treacherous banded krait, a deadly snake whose fangs are prized by the Wolf Council. Along the way, he encounters other creatures of the jungle and discovers that they too have their own set of laws and customs that they uphold.

As Mowgli navigates the jungle, he realizes that these laws and customs are what hold the fragile eco-system together, and that violating them could have disastrous consequences. He also recognizes his own impact in the jungle ecosystem disrupting the food chain, he humbles himself before the animals realizing that unity and civility is integral to keeping the balance of all things.

The episode ends with Mowgli returning to the Wolf Council with the krait's tooth in hand, demonstrating his worth to the pack and his understanding of the need for the Jungle Law. Mowgli renews his commitment to the pack, and they all cheer in celebration. The experience, however, accumulates Mowgli's feeling that he doesn't belong and is even less inclined to remain under the authority.
