The Invincible is a drama series that aired on Mediacorp Channel 8 in 2019. It starred veteran actors Xie Shaoguang, Phyllis Quek, Jeff Wang, Yvonne Lim and Florence Tan in leading roles. The show revolves around two rival clans vying for control over the riches and power in 1920s Singapore - the wealthy and influential Song family who owns a shipping empire, and the ruthless Lim family who rules the underworld.
Xie Shaoguang plays Song Zhenghong, the patriarch of the Song family. As the head of the family business, he is focused on expanding his shipping empire and grooming his eldest son Song Tiancheng (Jeff Wang) to take over the reins. However, his ambitions are threatened by the scheming Lim family matriarch (Phyllis Quek) who is determined to usurp the Song family's status and wealth.
Song Zhenghong's trusted confidante is his best friend Xu Lejian (Yvonne Lim), a powerful tycoon who has helped build up the Song empire over the years. Lejian is secretly in love with Zhenghong but keeps her feelings hidden.
Zhenghong's younger son Song Tianyu (played by Ian Fang) is the more sentimental and artistic brother, who has no interest in the family business. He falls for the beautiful songstress Su Manman (Florence Tan), sparking a doomed romance that threatens to destroy both families.
As the two families wage war against each other using underhanded tactics, political connections and brute force, no one is safe from the crossfire. Long-buried secrets, forbidden romances and betrayals threaten to tear both clans apart from within.
Shot against the backdrop of 1920s colonial Singapore, The Invincible showcases the glamorous world of the wealthy elite, while also shedding light on the gritty underbelly of rival gangs, opium dens and brothels.
Veteran actor Xie Shaoguang delivers a powerful performance as the stern patriarch Song Zhenghong, a man desperate to hold on to his power and empire. His complex relationship with his sons and Lejian add emotional depth to the story.
Phyllis Quek is brilliant as the ruthless Lim matriarch, her aristocratic manner masking a vicious streak. Her ambitions know no bounds, as she manipulates all those around her in Machiavellian fashion.
Jeff Wang puts in a solid performance as the conflicted eldest Song son Tiancheng, torn between duty to his father and his conscience. Yvonne Lim also shines as the stoic Lejian, hiding her fragility behind a tough exterior.
Florence Tan injects vibrancy into her role as the dazzling songstress Manman, whose dreams of fame and love collide with cold-blooded realities. Ian Fang is sympathetic as the gentle Tianyu, the Song clan's weakest link.
With its lavish sets and costumes contrasted against the gritty underworld locales, The Invincible brings 1920s Singapore to life in stunning fashion. Backed by strong acting performances, the series delivers an epic tale of ambition, honor, betrayal and forbidden love.
