The episode opens with a shot of a dingy gymnasium where a young boxer named Joey has his final match. His trainer and manager, Gus, is overly invested in Joey's success, as it means he can finally retire comfortably. Joey is fighting a much larger opponent, and though he manages to hold his own for a while, he is ultimately knocked out, ending any hope of him going on to bigger things. Gus is devastated, feeling like he has let Joey down.
Meanwhile, Dr. David Banner is hitchhiking through town and ends up outside the gymnasium just as Joey is carried out on a stretcher. Concerned, Banner heads inside to see what's going on and comes across Gus in the locker room, sobbing over Joey's unconscious body. Banner tries to comfort him and Gus confides that he's afraid his debtors are going to come after him now that Joey hasn't won the fight. Banner suggests Gus go to the police and possibly enter Joey into some kind of witness protection, but Gus shrugs this off, insisting that it wouldn't work and he'd just end up getting whacked.
That night, Banner is camping out in the woods when he hears Joey and Gus arguing. Gus is berating Joey for not being able to win the fight and thus freeing him from his debts. Joey tries to explain that he just wasn't strong enough, but Gus doesn't want to hear it. In a rage, he hits Joey, causing him to fall backwards onto a rock and die. Banner rushes out to see what happened, but by the time he reaches them, Gus has fled the scene.
Banner is distraught over what he's witnessed and, in a moment of intense emotion, transforms into the Hulk. He picks up Joey's lifeless body and carries it into town. The townspeople are immediately frightened by the sight of the giant green monster holding a dead body and the police are called.
Hulk manages to evade the police and sets off into the night with Joey's body. He eventually comes across Gus, who is hiding out in a seedy motel. Hulk smashes his way in and confronts Gus about what he's done. Gus tries to play it off like Joey's death was just an accident, but Hulk isn't buying it. In a fit of rage, he trashes the motel room and nearly kills Gus, before storming off into the night.
The next day, Banner wakes up in the woods with no memory of what happened the previous night. He makes his way into town, where he sees a newspaper with a headline about a giant green monster carrying a dead body. Realizing what he's done, Banner devises a plan to turn himself in to the police and take responsibility for Joey's death as a means of atoning for his actions as the Hulk.
The police are skeptical of Banner's story at first, but ultimately believe him and take him into custody. Banner is charged with Joey's death and as he awaits trial, he spends time reflecting on his actions and the impact they've had on those around him.
In the end, Banner is found guilty of manslaughter and is sentenced to time in prison. As he is led away in handcuffs, the townspeople look on with a mix of fear and pity. Despite his guilt, Banner feels a sense of peace knowing that he has taken responsibility for his actions and has done what he can to make things right.
