Four socially-awkward high school boys - Will, Simon, Jay, and Neil - are back in this new installment of The Inbetweeners. In episode 2 of season 1, titled "Bunk Off," the boys are facing the consequences of their first encounter with women, and in particular with the beautiful, popular girl Carli. Will is still set on impressing her, but the boys decide to take a day off school to hang out and maybe even spy on her.
The episode begins with a montage of the boys getting ready to play hooky: waking up early, trying to come up with an excuse note for their parents, and packing some snacks for the day. Once they've made it out of school, they head to the park to enjoy their day of freedom. However, Simon and Neil quickly start to feel guilty and miss being in class - especially since a test is coming up soon. Will and Jay are less concerned, as their minds are still occupied with Carli.
As the day goes on, the boys decide to venture into town to grab some lunch and maybe even catch a glimpse of Carli. After an awkward encounter at a cafe where they try to order drinks that make them seem more "grown up," they spot Carli across the street. Will, seeing an opportunity to impress her, leaps into action and follows her into a store. However, Simon, Jay, and Neil are skeptical of Will's chances and decide to hang back outside.
Inside the store, Will awkwardly tries to strike up a conversation with Carli, but ends up just seeming creepy. Meanwhile, outside, Simon realizes he's left his phone in the cafe and goes back to retrieve it. Once he's inside, he realizes he needs to use the bathroom - and promptly gets stuck in the window trying to climb out. This leads to a hilarious sequence of events, as Simon tries to call for help without alerting the cafe's employees.
Back outside, Jay and Neil have spotted some older, cooler boys and decide to try to impress them by bragging about the girls they've hooked up with. However, their lies quickly unravel and the older boys mock them mercilessly. Meanwhile, Will is still inside the store trying to talk to Carli, and ends up getting locked in the bathroom with her. As they wait for someone to rescue them, Will and Carli finally have a conversation that doesn't involve him coming across as a complete weirdo. However, things take a turn for the worst when they're finally freed and Will immediately vomits on the floor.
The boys eventually make their way back to school, where they find out that their absence has been noticed and they now have to sit through an extra class. Simon is relieved, as it means he won't be unprepared for the upcoming test, but the others are less pleased. As they sit through a boring lecture, they realize that maybe being in school isn't so bad after all.
Throughout the episode, the boys face the awkwardness and uncertainty that comes with being teenagers, as they try to impress girls, fit in with their peers, and figure out who they are. While they may not always succeed - and often find themselves in hilariously embarrassing situations - they're always there for each other, and their friendship is what keeps them going. "Bunk Off" is a funny, poignant episode that captures the spirit of The Inbetweeners as a whole.
