The Inbetweeners season 1 episode 1 is titled "First Day" and it introduces viewers to the show's four main characters: Will, Simon, Jay, and Neil.
The episode begins with Will, a new transfer student, arriving at his new school. Will is not like the other students at his new school - he's a bit nerdy, wears outdated clothing, and has a strict single mother who works as a lawyer. Will's mom drops him off at school and embarrasses him by giving him a big hug and kissing him goodbye in front of his new classmates.
Will soon meets Simon, Jay, and Neil, three other boys who are outcasts in their own ways. Simon is in love with a girl named Carli and is constantly trying to impress her, but she doesn't seem to return his affection. Jay is vulgar and crude, constantly talking about sex and making inappropriate jokes. Neil is laid-back and somewhat clueless, but friendly and easy to get along with.
The four boys quickly become friends and spend their days trying to fit in at school, while also getting into various misadventures. In the first episode, they team up to try and sneak into a popular nightclub, but are promptly thrown out by bouncers when they realize the boys are underage. They also try to impress a group of cool kids by lying about their weekend plans, but end up getting caught in their lies.
Throughout the episode, Will struggles to fit in at his new school and make friends. He feels like an outsider, especially when he sees how close Simon, Jay, and Neil are with each other. But by the end of the episode, Will starts to feel more comfortable with his new friends and realizes that maybe he doesn't need to change himself completely in order to fit in.
"First Day" sets the tone for the rest of the series, introducing viewers to the show's irreverent humor and relatable characters. The Inbetweeners is a coming-of-age comedy that focuses on the awkwardness and insecurities of adolescence, and the first episode does an excellent job of showcasing this. Will, Simon, Jay, and Neil are all flawed, but endearing, characters who viewers will root for and relate to. Overall, "First Day" is a strong introduction to the series and sets the foundation for what is to come.
