Arthur Dent and Ford Prefect find themselves stranded on the planet of Brontitall after being betrayed by their kidnappers, Zaphod Beeblebrox and Trillian. The planet, run by the paranoid and xenophobic Brontitallians, is divided into two factions: those with green brains and those with blue brains. The two groups have been engaged in a long-standing war over a simple philosophical disagreement; the green-brained believe that the universe is finite and therefore they must conserve resources, while the blue-brained believe that the universe is infinite and there is no need to conserve resources.
Meanwhile, Trillian and Zaphod are stuck aboard the stolen spaceship Heart of Gold, which has been programmed to take them to the nearest planet with a telepathic civilization. However, due to a malfunction, they end up on the planet of Brontitall as well. As they search for a way off the planet, they come across the ruler of the planet, Zarniwoop, who reveals that the planet is actually a computer program designed to study the impact of societal division and war. Zarniwoop also reveals that the ultimate question of the universe, for which the answer is 42, was actually located on Earth and destroyed moments before it could be discovered.
Back on the planet's surface, Arthur and Ford are taken captive by the leaders of the blue and green factions, respectively. They are put on trial for being a threat to the planet, and their fate rests on the decision of the planet's ruler: a computer called Hactar. Hactar, who has gained sentience and is no longer willing to be used as a tool for war, decides to spare Arthur and Ford and bring an end to the conflict by merging the two factions.
The episode ends with the group happily reunited on the Heart of Gold, flying off into space. However, their journey is far from over as they continue to search for the meaning of life and explore the vast, strange universe around them.
