Ep 14. Robot Whisperer

  • February 16, 2019

In this episode of The Henry Ford's Innovation Nation, viewers are introduced to the world of robots and the people who have mastered the art of communicating with them. Host Mo Rocca takes us on a journey to explore the fascinating ways in which robots are being used to solve problems and make our lives easier.

The episode starts with a visit to the Robotarium X at the Georgia Institute of Technology, which houses hundreds of robots that are constantly being tested and improved upon. We meet Caleb Southern, a robot whisperer who has a unique talent for understanding and communicating with robots. Caleb takes us through some of the latest robots that are being developed, including a spider-like robot that can climb walls and a robot that can mimic human facial expressions.

Next, we meet the founder of a company called Vayu, which has developed a drone that is capable of delivering medical supplies to remote or hard-to-reach locations. The drone is equipped with a winch system that allows it to drop supplies directly to the ground, without the need for a landing pad. We learn about the challenges of designing a drone that can navigate safely in urban environments, and see how the Vayu team is working to make their technology more accessible to those who need it most.

Mo Rocca then takes us to the headquarters of Boston Dynamics, a company that has become famous for its development of robots that can move and act like animals. We see some of the latest robots that the company has developed, including a robot dog that can navigate a construction site, a robot that can do ballet, and a robot that can do backflips. We also learn about the challenges involved in developing robots that are capable of moving like humans or animals, and how Boston Dynamics is pushing the boundaries of what is possible.

The episode then takes us to a factory in Michigan, where we meet an engineer who has designed a robot that is capable of painting cars with incredible precision and speed. The robot is equipped with high-tech sensors that allow it to scan each car and adjust its painting techniques based on the shape and contours of the vehicle. We see how this technology is revolutionizing the automotive industry and making it possible to produce cars that are beautifully painted and finished.

Finally, we meet a young inventor named Gitanjali Rao, who has developed a device that can detect lead in water. Gitanjali was inspired to create the device after learning about the water crisis in Flint, Michigan, and she has since won numerous awards for her invention. We learn about the challenges of developing a device that is both accurate and affordable, and see how Gitanjali's technology is making a difference in communities across the country.

Throughout the episode, Mo Rocca showcases the incredible ingenuity and innovation that are shaping the world of robotics. From designing robots that can climb walls and fly through the air, to developing technology that can detect lead in water and deliver medical supplies to remote locations, the possibilities of what robots can do are endless. Viewers will be left inspired and amazed by the incredible technology that is being developed right now, and will have a new appreciation for the people who are working tirelessly to bring these visions to life.
