In "Women's Work," the eighth episode of the second season of The Handmaid's Tale, the story continues to follow Offred's harrowing journey. As she tries to navigate her life in the oppressive world of Gilead, she faces even more dangerous challenges.
The episode follows Offred as she faces a difficult task in helping Serena Joy. After an emotional revelation from her doctor, Serena is forced to confront the harsh reality that she and her husband, Commander Waterford, cannot have children. This devastating news sends Serena into a deep depression. Offred, who is already struggling with her own grief and fear, is tasked with helping to lift Serena out of her depression and getting her back on track in order to continue their fight for a child.
Meanwhile, in the colonies, Emily (who was previously known as Ofglen) faces her own set of challenges. She is dealing with the harsh working conditions in the colonies, which are designed to punish those who have gone against the regime. She is forced to work in toxic waste, and the dangerous environment she finds herself in is taking a toll on her. The once defiant and strong Ofglen is now struggling to fight for survival as she faces new obstacles every day.
Throughout the episode, we also see glimpses of the Waterfords' past and how they became involved with the creation of Gilead. This allows viewers to gain insight into how the regime came to be and how the characters we have come to know were affected by it.
As always, the episode is full of tension and heartbreak. It is a stark reminder of the horrors that can occur when a government gains too much power and the importance of standing up against oppression. The Handmaid's Tale continues to be a powerful and emotional show that resonates with audiences. "Women's Work" is no exception as it highlights the strength of the female characters and their ability to fight against the forces that are trying to keep them down.
