In the third episode of The Grand Tour season 1, titled Opera, Art and Donuts, the hosts Jeremy Clarkson, Richard Hammond, and James May head to Italy to test three top sports cars: the Lamborghini Aventador S, the Honda Civic Type R, and the Mazda MX-5 RF. The trio drives on some of Italy’s best roads and puts the cars to the test on a track.
The episode starts with the hosts discussing their upcoming trip to Italy while enjoying some coffee and donuts. They explain that their goal is to find out which of the three cars is the best sports car for all occasions. While James May is convinced that the Mazda MX-5 RF is the best of the three, Jeremy and Richard disagree and argue that the Lamborghini Aventador S is the best.
Once in Italy, the hosts travel to the city of Vicenza, where they visit an opera house to test the acoustics of the cars. They take turns revving their engines and driving around the empty opera house, enjoying the sounds of the engines echoing throughout the building.
Next, the trio heads to Padua to visit an art gallery. There, they come across some abstract art pieces that they struggle to understand. However, a local expert helps them gain a better appreciation of the artworks. The hosts then decide to create their own abstract art pieces using the sports cars as their tools.
After the art gallery, they drive to a race track outside of the city, where they will test the capabilities of the cars. They try out the cars on different terrains, including a gravel track, a rallycross circuit, and a straight track for top speed tests. The Lamborghini Aventador S proves to be the fastest, but the Mazda MX-5 RF excels in driving dynamics and handling.
Throughout the episode, there are also various humorous segments, such as the trio’s attempt to drive through a toll booth at high speed and the disastrous consequences that follow. There is also a segment where they visit a vineyard and try to make wine with the cars.
Overall, the Opera, Art and Donuts episode of The Grand Tour season 1 is a fun and entertaining watch. The hosts’ antics and competitive banter keep things interesting, and the stunning Italian scenery and beautiful sports cars make for great viewing.
