In episode 2 of season 4 of The Good Wife, titled "And The Law Won," we are reintroduced to our heroine, Alicia Florrick, who is in the midst of another legal battle. This time, she is tasked with defending a man who has been wrongly accused of murdering an elderly woman. As she digs deeper into the case, she begins to uncover a web of deceit and corruption that leads all the way to the top of Chicago's political hierarchy.
Alicia's new client is a quiet, unassuming man named Colin Sweeney, who is accused of killing his wife's elderly aunt while she was under his care. Despite the overwhelming evidence against him, Colin maintains his innocence and insists that he is being set up by someone with a vendetta against him. Alicia initially takes the case as a favor to her husband, Peter, who is hoping to curry favor with the city's political elite by helping Sweeney out.
As Alicia begins to investigate the murder, she discovers that there may be more to the story than meets the eye. She uncovers evidence suggesting that the victim was involved in a shady real estate deal that could have led to her death. In addition, she discovers that Sweeney's wife may have had something to do with the murder, and that she may be working with a mysterious third party to frame her husband.
As Alicia delves deeper into the case, she finds herself up against some of the most powerful people in the city, including the state's attorney and a wealthy real estate mogul. She also has to contend with her own personal demons, as her feelings for her former lover, Will Gardner, continue to resurface.
Meanwhile, Alicia's law firm is dealing with its own internal struggles. The partners are at odds over whether to accept a hit-and-run case that could bring in a big payday, but which also has ethical implications. Alicia is caught in the middle of the dispute, and must navigate the politics of her workplace while also trying to win her client's freedom.
Throughout the episode, we see Alicia at her best and worst. She is a fierce advocate for her client, but her personal life is in shambles. Her marriage to Peter is strained, and her feelings for Will continue to cloud her judgment. Despite these personal challenges, she remains focused on defending her client and uncovering the truth behind the murder.
In the end, Alicia's dogged determination pays off, as she is able to exonerate Sweeney and uncover the true culprit behind the murder. Along the way, she proves herself to be a true champion of justice, even when the odds are stacked against her. "And The Law Won" is a thrilling episode that showcases the best of The Good Wife's writing and acting, and sets the stage for an exciting season ahead.
