In the season 4 opener of The Good Wife, titled "I Fought the Law," the show picks up where it left off in the third season finale: with Alicia Florrick (Julianna Margulies) and Cary Agos (Matt Czuchry) deciding to leave Lockhart Gardner and start their own law firm. But before they can do that, they have to wrap up their work at Lockhart Gardner, which includes defending a client against a lawsuit brought by a former employee.
The episode opens with Will Gardner (Josh Charles) and Diane Lockhart (Christine Baranski) in full-on damage control mode as they try to keep their biggest clients from jumping ship to Alicia and Cary's new firm. Meanwhile, Alicia is dealing with her own set of problems at home, including her son Zach's (Graham Phillips) decision to move in with his father, Peter (Chris Noth).
As Alicia and Cary prepare for their final case at Lockhart Gardner, they quickly realize that their client, a trucking company accused of sabotaging the brakes on one of their trucks, is woefully unprepared for trial. With the help of investigator Kalinda Sharma (Archie Panjabi), they race against time to gather evidence that will exonerate their client.
Along the way, Alicia and Cary also have to contend with their former colleagues at Lockhart Gardner, who do everything in their power to make their transition to a new firm as difficult as possible. This includes trying to poach their clients and sabotaging their work on the trucking case.
Despite the obstacles in their way, Alicia and Cary manage to present a compelling case in court, calling into question the credibility of the plaintiff's star witness. But when new evidence comes to light, they realize that their client's innocence may not be so clear-cut after all.
In the end, the case takes a surprising turn that leaves both Alicia and Cary questioning their decision to leave Lockhart Gardner. The episode ends on a cliffhanger that sets the stage for a season full of twists and turns, as the two rival law firms go head-to-head in a battle for supremacy.
Overall, "I Fought the Law" is a strong start to the fourth season of The Good Wife, with plenty of drama, intrigue, and suspense to keep viewers hooked. Margulies, Czuchry, Panjabi, and the rest of the cast deliver strong performances, and the writing is sharp and engaging throughout. Whether you're a longtime fan of the show or a newcomer looking to get hooked, this episode is definitely worth watching.
