In season 3 episode 2 of The Good Place, titled "The Brainy Bunch," the story picks up where the previous episode left off. The group is trying to figure out how to improve the point system that determines whether people go to "The Good Place" or "The Bad Place." Tahani proposes getting a group of geniuses together to come up with a solution.
Eleanor, Chidi, Tahani, and Jason head to Mindy St. Claire's house to try to recruit her, but find out she has been kidnapped by the demons. Instead, they come across the "Brainy Bunch," a group of intellectuals who have been living in the afterlife together for years. The Brainy Bunch includes philosophers, scientists, and mathematicians who have been discussing the point system for quite some time.
The group is hesitant to let Eleanor and her friends join in, as they believe they are amateurs. However, Eleanor sees an opportunity to prove that she has grown and changed since arriving in the afterlife by demonstrating her newfound empathy. She convinces the Brainy Bunch to let them work together to come up with a solution.
Chidi, Tahani, and Jason are each assigned to a group within the Brainy Bunch, and they each struggle to keep up with the other members. Meanwhile, Eleanor is paired with a philosopher named Simone, whom she finds herself attracted to. Eleanor begins to question whether she truly deserves to be in The Good Place and starts to consider confessing to Simone that she doesn't belong there.
As they work, the group discovers that the point system is flawed beyond repair. They realize that every act a person takes has endless consequences that cannot be predicted and that the point system as it currently stands is impossible to quantify. Instead, they come up with a new idea: to scrap the point system altogether and replace it with a subjective system based on intent and effort.
The episode ends with Eleanor struggling with her feelings for Simone and whether or not to be honest with her. The Brainy Bunch presents their new system to Michael, who is impressed with their work but warns them that they will face challenges in implementing it. The episode serves as a source of character development, as Eleanor continues to grapple with her past and her newfound moral growth.
Overall, "The Brainy Bunch" is a thought-provoking episode that raises larger questions about ethics, morality, and the human experience. The characters continue to develop and grow, and the viewer is left wondering how this new system will impact the afterlife and everyone in it.
