Dr. Shaun Murphy continues to face various challenges as a surgical resident at San Jose St. Bonaventure Hospital, and the sixteenth episode of The Good Doctor's second season is no different. Titled "Believe," this episode revolves around Dr. Murphy's mentor, Dr. Aaron Glassman. Dr. Glassman had previously been diagnosed with a rare form of brain cancer, and as he struggles through his treatment, Dr. Murphy is left to his own resources without his trusted mentor.
With Dr. Glassman's health deteriorating, Dr. Murphy begins to feel the weight of the pressure that comes with being a surgeon. He becomes increasingly anxious and is unable to perform at his best. As the episode progresses, Dr. Murphy begins to doubt his abilities, leading him to question whether he is cut out for the job. His colleagues, however, continue to support him unconditionally, reminding Dr. Murphy that he is more than capable of being an amazing surgeon.
At the same time, the hospital has an emergency on their hands when a patient with a rare genetic disorder is admitted. This patient has a unique condition that prevents their skin from being able to withstand any kind of contact with the outside world. As the hospital staff prepares to care for this patient, we see Dr. Neil Melendez deciding to operate on a patient who has been diagnosed with severe sleep apnea.
There is also a subplot in this episode which sheds light on Dr. Morgan Reznick's past. Dr. Reznick, who has proven to be an abrasive and confident member of the team, allows herself to become vulnerable as she opens up about her emotional struggles. This emotional vulnerability leads her to show a softer, more sympathetic side to her colleagues.
As the episode climaxes, Dr. Murphy is forced to make a big decision that will test his ability to take charge and make crucial decisions in a fast-paced environment. The pressure is certainly on for Dr. Murphy as he faces one of the most challenging days of his life, and viewers are left on the edge of their seats as he struggles to overcome his self-doubt and rise to the occasion.
The sixteenth episode of season two of The Good Doctor makes for an enthralling watch that highlights the emotional, mental, and physical pressures that surgical residents experience on a daily basis. It's a must-watch for anyone who wants to get a glimpse into the lives of surgeons and see the lengths they go to in order to save their patients' lives.
