Ep 1. Burnt Food

Dr. Shaun Murphy, an autistic savant, is recruited to the surgical unit at San Jose St. Bonaventure Hospital, despite skepticism from both staff and patients due to his condition. Shaun's first day on the job is a hectic one, as he starts by exhibiting some of his quirks such as being unable to lie and having difficulty with social interactions. However, his intelligence and remarkable analytical skills become clear quickly as he assists in diagnosing a young boy's rare medical condition. The surgical team members, including Dr. Neil Melendez, Dr. Claire Browne, and Dr. Jared Kalu, argue over how to treat the boy and whether or not to take a risk that could save his life or potentially harm him. Meanwhile, Shaun faces personal obstacles when he must confront a traumatic event from his past that resurfaces during a case. Throughout the episode, we see glimpses of Shaun's struggles growing up and the prejudice he faced as a child, making his accomplishment of becoming a surgeon even more remarkable. The episode ends on a cliffhanger as Shaun's honesty could potentially jeopardize his job and his future at the hospital.
