Blanche's wealthy sister, Virginia, arrives in Miami for a visit with her husband who is a doctor. While Blanche is excited to see her sister, she learns that her sister has also brought along her mentally challenged son, who has never been exposed to the outside world and has lived his entire life in their mansion. Blanche welcomes her nephew into her home, but soon finds that he is more difficult to manage than she anticipated. She struggles to help him adapt to his new surroundings and to teach him how to behave in social situations.
Meanwhile, Rose is excited to participate in a local festival, but becomes consumed with trying to win a stuffed octopus at a carnival game. She spends all her money and becomes frustrated when she can't seem to win, even with Dorothy's help. Sofia advises Rose to give up and enjoy the festival, but Rose becomes so obsessed with winning the octopus that she risks ruining her day.
As the episode progresses, the family dynamics between Blanche and Virginia are explored. Blanche is jealous of her sister's wealth and social status, and Virginia is condescending towards Blanche, often making rude comments about her lifestyle and her home. Blanche struggles to stand up to her sister and confront her about her behavior, but ultimately finds a way to communicate her feelings and reconcile with Virginia.
The episode also tackles the issue of mental illness and how it affects families. Blanche's nephew is portrayed sympathetically, as a person who cannot help his behaviors and who needs the compassion and patience of those around him. The show also highlights the challenges faced by families who care for mentally ill relatives, and the need for resources and support to help them cope.
Overall, "Family Affair" is a touching and thoughtful episode that explores themes of family, jealousy, and compassion. The characters are well-developed and the performances are all strong, making it a standout installment in the second season of The Golden Girls.
