In the season 6 premiere of The Goldbergs entitled "Sixteen Candles," Adam turns 16 and is ready to grow up. His parents, Beverly and Murray, are throwing him a big party, but Adam is focused on getting a driver's license. He enlists the help of Barry, his older brother, and Erica, his older sister, to teach him how to drive in secret. However, driving lessons don't go as planned, and Adam finds himself in a series of mishaps.
Meanwhile, Beverly struggles with the fact that her youngest son is growing up and becoming more independent. She tries to hold on to their traditions, including making Adam a special birthday breakfast, but he is less interested in these things now that he is a teenager.
The episode also deals with the continuing relationship between Erica and her boyfriend Geoff. Their relationship is put to the test when they attend a school dance together, as they are both self-conscious about their dance skills. As they navigate this new territory, Erica realizes that she may have feelings for Geoff that go beyond just dating.
As always, the show is set in the 1980s and features plenty of pop culture references, including nods to the iconic movie "Sixteen Candles" and the hit TV show "Miami Vice." The humor is light-hearted and family-friendly, but the show also deals with relatable issues such as growing up, first love, and navigating relationships with parents and siblings.
Fans of The Goldbergs will enjoy seeing the familiar characters continue to grow and evolve in season 6. The episode is a great entry point for new viewers as well, as it captures the spirit and humor of the series as a whole.
