Beverly Goldberg, the overprotective mother, as always is doing something to interfere with the space of her family members. In this week's episode of The Goldbergs, Beverly forces her husband to construct a "Kremp-style" above-ground pool to help her children cool off in the summer heat and also plans a lavish group party around that.
As Beverly sets out to host the "biggest pool party", Barry and Adam plot with some girls from school to take over the Kremps' pool with a side wager on who can make the biggest splash. Meanwhile, Erica spends her summer vacation sneaking into a forbidden stash of her dad's Playboy magazines and begins to think she and her friends should learn the ways of Playboy. But when Erica’s boyfriend, Geoff Schwartz, finds them having a fake photoshoot, the reactions are hilarious.
The cast gives another strong performance illustrating the self-centered and humorous lives of the Goldberg family, and Jeff Garlin as Murray Goldberg provides many laughs with his deadpan humor. The subplot portraying Erica's rebellion, her friendships, and talks to her high school boyfriend Geoff Schwartz is a typical high school drama and is handled realistically well. Her innate sense of humor and the full cast’s interaction with one another make The Goldbergs an entertaining watch.
Once again, the show cleverly explores the period, capturing America in the late 80s, with all the good things that came with it. The audience is treated to an American flag and eagle statue, tube socks, pink flamingos, cassette players, and pukka shells, among other late-80s icons. The nostalgia quality is high, and The Goldbergs knock the ball out of the park every time.
The Goldberg family is witty, engaging, and likable, and the episode does a fantastic job of balancing the humor and the heart. The big reveal at the end of the episode isn’t what viewers might expect, and it almost leaves the audience wanting more at the conclusion.
Finally, the soundtrack is something that fans look forward to the most in each episode of The Goldbergs. Each episode features a playlist of popular 80s tunes that is worth mentioning. From Walk Like An Egyptian to Mickey, Oh Yeah to Footloose, the soundtrack on The Goldbergs never gets old, adding another layer of nostalgia.
Overall, "I Caddyshacked the Pool" is another amusing episode of The Goldbergs that manages to balance its heartfelt moments with humor. The episode shines with a well-written script, solid performances, and an abundance of 80s nostalgia. The Goldbergs continue to give the audience an enjoyable 20 minutes of laughs, and "I Caddyshacked the Pool" is no exception.
