Beverly Goldberg is on a mission to make sure that her son Adam gets to experience the quintessential American childhood. This means that she is determined to make sure that Adam has all the latest toys and gadgets, and that he gets to try out all the latest fads and trends. In this episode of The Goldbergs, titled "Big Baby Ball," Beverly's latest obsession is a toy from the 1980s called the Baby Ball.
The Baby Ball is essentially a large inflatable ball that kids can climb inside and roll around in. Beverly is convinced that Adam will love it, so she buys one and brings it home. However, things don't go as planned when Adam decides that he's not interested in the Baby Ball. He's already moved on to the next big thing, a toy called the POG.
Meanwhile, Barry is dealing with his own set of problems. He's desperate to make it onto the high school soccer team, and he's been practicing non-stop in the hopes of impressing the coach. However, when it comes time for tryouts, Barry finds that he's not quite as prepared as he thought he was.
As the episode unfolds, we see Beverly trying to convince Adam to give the Baby Ball a try, while Barry struggles to make a name for himself on the soccer field. Along the way, we see the rest of the Goldberg family dealing with their own challenges and obstacles.
One of the things that sets The Goldbergs apart from other sitcoms is the way that it captures the essence of the 1980s. From the fashion and the music to the toys and fads, each episode is like a trip down memory lane. In "Big Baby Ball," we see Beverly reliving her own childhood and trying to share that experience with her son.
The episode is filled with references to 80s pop culture, from the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles to the movie Dirty Dancing. It's clear that the writers of the show have a deep love and appreciation for the decade, and they do a great job of weaving those references into each storyline.
As always, the performances are top notch. Wendi McLendon-Covey shines as Beverly, bringing just the right mix of overprotectiveness and sentimentality to the role. Jeff Garlin is equally strong as Murray, Beverly's good-natured but gruff husband. Together, they make a great comedic duo.
The rest of the cast is also excellent. Sean Giambrone is perfect as Adam, capturing both the awkwardness and wonder of adolescence. Troy Gentile brings a lot of heart to the role of Barry, and Hayley Orrantia is a standout as Adam's sister Erica.
Overall, "Big Baby Ball" is a great episode of The Goldbergs. It's a nostalgic trip back in time, filled with humor, heart, and plenty of 80s references. Fans of the show will love it, and newcomers will find plenty to enjoy as well. If you're looking for a fun, family-friendly sitcom that celebrates the decade that brought us big hair and leg warmers, this is definitely the show for you.
