As soon as Jim Longworth thinks he's got his next case sorted, the rules start changing. In the middle of investigating a skydiving accident and trying to determine whether it was foul play or not, Jim is approached by a private detective, Emily Swenson. She's got an eccentric client, a man named Milton Kassel, who's convinced that someone is stealing his skin.
At first, Jim dismisses the case as a delusional rant, but as he starts to investigate it, he realizes that there is something much more complicated going on. Kassel has been taking pictures of his skin every day to prove that it's disappearing. In the photographs, the area where his skin should be is instead just empty space. But of course, Jim can't exactly bring this evidence to his colleagues at the department.
As Jim digs deeper into the case, he discovers that Kassel may actually be telling the truth. But how is it possible for someone's skin to vanish without leaving a trace? And why is someone trying to steal Kassel's skin in the first place? No one seems to know, but Jim is determined to find out.
Meanwhile, Jim's love life is getting complicated. He and Callie have been dating for a while now, but they're still trying to figure out how to navigate the complexities of being in a relationship with a medical examiner. When Callie is called to the scene of the skydiving accident to examine the body, Jim can't help but feel jealous of the easy rapport she has with her male colleagues.
At the same time, Jim is forced to confront his own fears about commitment and vulnerability when he meets Emily Swenson. The private detective is beautiful and mysterious, and Jim can't help but be drawn to her. But can he trust her, or is she just using him to get to Kassel?
As the investigation heats up, Jim finds himself at the center of a dangerous game of cat and mouse. He's determined to solve the case and protect Kassel at all costs, but the stakes are higher than he ever imagined. With Callie and Emily both vying for his attention, and the clock ticking down on Kassel's missing skin, Jim will have to use all of his wit and cunning to unravel the mystery before it's too late.
