After the explosive season finale, the mutant underground finds itself fractured and on the run. In a bid to regroup, the Strucker family moves to a new town in hope to keep a low profile and start anew. However, when a series of strange incidents occur and a new threat emerges, they are forced to come to terms with their powers and their plight as mutants.
Meanwhile, Dr. Campbell continues his crusade against mutants, using a powerful new tool called the Hound program to hunt them down and capture them for experimentation. With the help of the newly formed Sentinel Services, they pose a grave menace to mutant-kind everywhere.
This is where we find ourselves in The Gifted season 2 episode 1, titled eMergence. As the first episode of the season, it does a great job of setting up the overarching themes and conflicts that will carry on throughout the season. The main theme is unity - as the mutant underground tries to reconcile with the splintered off factions, dealing with the legacy of the past, they must come together to survive the new threats and challenges they are faced with.
The episode opens with a mysterious new mutant, Reeva Payge, being shown around her new lavish headquarters, with plans of protecting the mutant underground with her powerful psychic abilities. However, as the episode progresses, her motivations and objectives become more mysterious.
As the Strucker family settles into their new town, they attempt to adapt to a normal life. However, it soon becomes clear that the town's residents are not as accepting of mutants as they had hoped. This is best exemplified in a scene where Lauren and Andy Strucker are confronted by a group of school kids, who threaten them with bodily harm due to their being mutants.
As tensions mount and the mutant underground struggles to find their footing, Lauren is plagued by visions and dreams that hint at a greater destiny, possibly tied to her family's past.
Meanwhile, John Proudstar (Thunderbird) leads a mission to intercept a sentinel carrier and rescue some captured mutants. This leads to an explosive action scene that showcases the mutant powers in all their glory - from Clarice's portal opening abilities to Marcos's dazzling light powers.
As the episode progresses, we learn more about the Hound program and how the Sentinels plan to implement it in order to track mutants. We also get glimpses of the inner workings of the Purifiers, a group of anti-mutant vigilantes who will play a big role later in the season.
The standout performance of the episode is easily Emma Dumont as the conflicted Polaris. As we see her maternal instincts come to the forefront and her loyalty tested, we get a glimpse of the complex character that she truly is.
Overall, The Gifted season 2 episode 1 lays out the stakes for the upcoming season and sets up a number of compelling storylines for the mutants to follow. By the end of the episode, we are left with hope that they will pull through, but also the sense that danger looms ever present.
