The Gene Autry Show follows the adventures of singing cowboy Gene Autry as he travels the Old West with his trusted horse, Champion, and sidekick, Pat Buttram. In the first episode of the show's first season, titled "Head For Texas," Gene and Pat are hired to deliver a herd of cattle from Mexico to Texas.
As the duo sets out on their journey, they encounter a group of bandits led by a man named Benson (played by veteran character actor Roy Barcroft). Benson and his gang have been raiding cattle yards in the area and causing havoc for local ranchers. Determined to put a stop to the bandits' activities, Gene and Pat vow to protect their herd at all costs.
Along the way, they meet a young boy named Timmy (played by child actor Robert Hyatt) who has run away from his abusive stepfather. Gene and Pat take the boy under their wing and teach him the ways of the cowboy, including how to handle a gun and ride a horse. Timmy quickly proves to be a valuable asset to the team and helps them fend off the bandits when they attack.
As the group nears the Texas border, they are met by a group of Texas Rangers led by Captain Andrews (played by actor Lane Bradford). Andrews informs Gene and Pat that Benson and his men are wanted for crimes committed in Texas and asks for their assistance in capturing them. Gene and Pat agree to help and together with the Rangers, they ambush Benson and his gang in a thrilling gunfight.
In the end, Gene and Pat successfully deliver the herd of cattle to Texas and Benson and his men are brought to justice. Timmy decides to stay with Gene and Pat and continue learning the ways of the cowboy. The episode comes to a close with Gene singing a rousing rendition of the classic Western song, "Home on the Range."
Overall, "Head For Texas" sets the stage for the rest of The Gene Autry Show, showcasing Autry's signature blend of singing, shooting, and heroic cowboy action.
