The Forsyte Saga is a historical drama that follows the aristocratic Forsyte family during the late 19th and early 20th centuries in England. In season 2 episode 4, we see the family continue to navigate the changing social and political landscape of their time.

The episode opens with Soames Forsyte, played by Damian Lewis, returning home from a business trip to Paris. His wife, Irene, played by Gina McKee, seems distant and aloof, which frustrates Soames. He tries to engage her in conversation about their upcoming trip to the countryside, but Irene doesn't seem interested.

Meanwhile, the next generation of Forsytes is coming into focus. Jolyon Forsyte, played by Rupert Graves, is now a grandfather, and his granddaughter Holly, played by Corinna Marlowe, is growing up quickly. Holly is bright and curious, but she is also spoiled and accustomed to getting her way. She clashes with her mother, June, played by Gillian Kearney, who wants her to be more disciplined and responsible.

As the family prepares for a weekend trip to the country, tensions rise between Soames and Irene. Soames is frustrated by Irene's lack of interest in their relationship, and Irene is haunted by the memory of the past and the secrets she keeps hidden.

At the country estate, the family is greeted by the charming and enigmatic Monty Dartie, played by Nicholas Farrell. Monty is the black sheep of the family, having married a French dancer and abandoned his responsibilities to his wife and child. Despite his flaws, Monty is a favorite of the family, and his arrival creates a stir.

As the weekend progresses, the family's various tensions and conflicts come to a head. Soames and Irene have a confrontation, and Irene is forced to confront the truth about her past. Jolyon tries to impart wisdom to his granddaughter Holly, but she chafes at his authority. And Monty finds himself at the center of a scandalous situation when he makes a move on Jolyon's wife, Helene, played by Irina Brook.

Overall, season 2 episode 4 of The Forsyte Saga is a thrilling and engaging installment of the series. The performances are strong, particularly from Damian Lewis and Gina McKee, who capture the complicated emotions of their characters. The writing is sharp and insightful, exploring themes of love, betrayal, and societal expectations. And the historical setting is beautifully rendered, transporting viewers to a bygone era of British aristocracy and privilege.
