In season 4 episode 2 of The First 48, titled "Inner Demons / Kids with Guns," viewers are taken on two separate investigations following homicides in different parts of the country.
The first case takes place in Harris County, Texas, where a man has been found murdered in his own home. The lead detective, Sgt. James Sowden, and his team quickly piece together that the victim was involved in drug dealing and robbery. With no physical evidence or eyewitnesses, Sowden must rely on the victim's acquaintances to determine a suspect. However, one of the potential witnesses has their own demons to deal with, complicating the investigation.
The second case takes place in Miami, Florida, where a group of teenagers have been involved in a drive-by shooting, leaving one person dead and another injured. Detective Armando Aguilar and his team investigate the case, and quickly identify one of the teenagers involved. As they begin to question the teen, they discover that he and his group of friends have been involved in other crimes in the area, including carjacking and robbery. The investigation takes a turn when a witness comes forth with information that sheds a new light on the case.
Throughout both investigations, the detectives feel the pressure of the clock ticking—the first 48 hours are crucial in any homicide investigation. Each clue found and suspect questioned presents a new piece to the puzzle, and the detectives must work quickly and efficiently to put all the pieces together before time runs out.
Viewers witness the emotional toll that these cases take on the detectives, as they work tirelessly to bring justice to the victims and their families. "Inner Demons / Kids with Guns" showcases the challenges and rewards of working in law enforcement, as well as the importance of teamwork and persistence in solving crimes.
