In season 4, episode 18 of The First 48, titled "Wrong Turn/Deadly Dance," viewers are taken into the real-life investigations of two different murder cases in different parts of the country.
In the first case, homicide detectives in Cincinnati, Ohio are called to a scene where a young woman has been shot and killed in her car after a night out with her boyfriend. The boyfriend is the primary suspect, but when he flees the scene and decides to run from the police, it casts even more suspicion on him. The detectives must work to find him and gather evidence to link him to the murder before he can escape the city and go into hiding.
Meanwhile, in Birmingham, Alabama, detectives are called to another scene where a man has been brutally beaten and left for dead in an alleyway. The victim, who appears to have been a well-liked member of the local dance community, is rushed to the hospital, but he ultimately dies from his injuries. The detectives must sift through clues and interviews to try and identify potential suspects, as well as determining the motive behind the violent attack.
As the investigations progress in both cases, viewers are granted access to the strategies, techniques, and challenges that homicide detectives face on a daily basis. The First 48 allows viewers to see the process from the initial response to the crime scene to the eventual arrest and charges of the suspects.
With the clock ticking and every second counting, every move that the detectives make could make the difference between life and death for the victim's families and justice for the communities they served.
