In season 3, episode 9 of The First 48 named "Last Exit/Out Cold", viewers follow the investigations of two separate homicides. The first investigation begins in the early hours of the morning in Birmingham, Alabama. A man is found dead in a parked car behind a popular nightclub. Detectives immediately notice a bullet hole in the back of the victim's head and wait for the coroner to arrive.
Detectives Chris Anderson and Darren Mitler arrive on the scene to begin their investigation. They study the video footage from the nightclubs' cameras and discover that the victim was seen exiting the club with another man. Detectives attempt to identify the other man seen with the victim, but the club's security footage is blurry, and the man's face is unrecognizable.
Their next step is to interview the victim's friends and family to determine if they have any information that could help the investigation. The victim's brother identifies the victim's girlfriend. After interviewing the girlfriend, detectives learn that the victim had been in a physical altercation with several men inside the nightclub earlier that night. Upon further investigation, they identify one of the men as a person of interest and bring him into custody for questioning.
The second investigation takes place in Miami, Florida, where a man is found beaten to death in his own home. Lead detective Kevin Ruggiero immediately notices that the victim's house has been ransacked, and there are signs of a struggle. Upon interviewing the victim's neighbor, it is discovered that he saw three young men leaving the victim's house the night before.
Detective Ruggiero, along with his partner Emiliano Tamayo, begin the search for the suspects. After canvassing the neighborhood and receiving tips from community members, they identify one of the suspects and bring him in for questioning. During questioning, the suspect admits to being in the victim's house but denies any involvement in the murder.
As the detectives continue to search for the other two suspects, they discover that one of them has fled the state, heading for California. The detectives work tirelessly to catch the suspect before he can escape the country altogether.
Throughout the episode, viewers watch as detectives use their experience and investigative techniques to piece together clues and solve the cases.
