In The Expanse season 5 episode 1, titled "Exodus," the show picks up right where it left off with the Rocinante crew back on Tycho Station trying to recover from the events of the previous season. Naomi is struggling with the trauma she experienced, Holden is trying to figure out what Marco Inaros is planning, and Amos is returning to his hometown of Baltimore on Earth to settle some unfinished business.
The episode opens with a wild space battle as the Free Navy, led by Marco Inaros, attacks the Martian Congressional Republic Navy. This battle sets the tone for the rest of the season as tensions continue to rise between the various political factions and the threat of war looms over the solar system.
Back on Tycho Station, Naomi is approached by a Belter named Karal who offers her some pills to help with her post-traumatic stress disorder. Naomi is hesitant at first but ultimately agrees to give them a try. Meanwhile, Holden is meeting with a scientist who has developed a new weapon that could potentially neutralize the Protomolecule. Holden is hopeful that this weapon could give them an edge in the fight against Inaros.
On Earth, Amos is reunited with an old friend named Erich who runs a brothel. Amos is there to visit a woman named Lydia who has been like a mother figure to him. However, he quickly realizes that something is off about the situation and starts to investigate. This leads him on a mission that takes him deep into the heart of Baltimore and puts him in danger.
We also get a glimpse of what life is like on Earth in the aftermath of the events of the previous season. We see how the Belters are viewed by the Earthers and how tensions continue to rise between the two groups. There is a sense of unease and unrest on Earth as people brace themselves for what is to come.
Overall, "Exodus" sets up the rest of the season nicely. We see the various plot threads starting to come together and the stakes are raised significantly. The show continues to excel in its world-building and character development, and it's clear that the writers have a clear plan for where they want the story to go. If this episode is any indication, season 5 of The Expanse is going to be an intense and thrilling ride.
