The Dovekeepers is a television show that premiered in March 2015 on CBS. Based on Alice Hoffman's best-selling historical novel of the same name, The Dovekeepers takes place in ancient Israel during the time of the Roman siege of Masada in 70 CE. The show tells the story of four extraordinary women: Shirah, a wise woman and healer, played by Cote de Pablo; Aziza, a young woman with exceptional skills as a warrior, played by Kathryn Prescott; Yael, a daughter of an assassin, played by Rachel Brosnahan; and Shirah's daughter-in-law Amram, a brave and loyal man, played by Diego Boneta. As the story unfolds, these four women become central to the community's survival during the siege.
One of the main storylines follows Shirah, a woman from a family of doves. Shirah was born with a mark on her forehead, which according to legend, is a sign that she is meant to be a dovekeeper. She has a deep connection with the birds and believes that the doves have the power to help protect her people. Cote de Pablo does an excellent job in portraying Shirah's strong personality, as well as her vulnerability and compassion.
Diego Boneta plays the role of Amram, Shirah's son-in-law. Amram is a devoted husband and father, but he eventually becomes one of the rebels fighting against the Romans. He is a skilled fighter, and his loyalty and determination make him a valuable asset to the community.
Kathryn Prescott portrays Aziza, a young woman who is forced to marry a wealthy merchant by her father. However, when she discovers that her new husband is abusive, she runs away and joins the rebels. Aziza is a skilled fighter and becomes an important member of the community's defense force.
Rachel Brosnahan plays Yael, a young girl whose father was an assassin. Yael is haunted by her father's sins and struggles with her own identity. She eventually finds purpose when she falls in love with a Roman soldier and decides to use her skills to help the rebels. Brosnahan's performance is particularly impressive, as she captures Yael's complex emotions and inner turmoil.
Sam Neill also stars in The Dovekeepers, playing the role of Josephus, a Roman general who is responsible for the siege. Although he is the enemy, Josephus struggles with his own loyalty and morality as he comes to understand the rebels' cause.
The Dovekeepers is a beautifully shot and well-acted series that explores themes of survival, love, and faith. The show's attention to detail in capturing the historical setting and narrative is impressive. It is a compelling and captivating drama that is sure to keep audiences engaged throughout its four episodes.
The Dovekeepers is a series that ran for 1 seasons (2 episodes) between March 31, 2015 and on CBS
