The Doctor is a medical drama television series produced by NBA Media Ventures, LLC. The show first aired in 2013 and ran for five seasons until its finale in 2018. The Doctor follows the personal and professional life of Dr. Hugh Knight, a talented and charismatic heart surgeon from Sydney, Australia.
Played by Craig McLachlan, Dr. Knight is known for his ostentatious lifestyle, indulging in lavish parties and owning a string of sports cars. However, his fast-paced and high-pressure career take a hit when a scandal erupts, forcing him to leave his prestigious job at a top hospital and relocate to a rural town in New South Wales, where he has to fulfill his contractual obligation to work at the local hospital there.
The move is a shock to the system for Dr. Knight, who is allergic to the outback, the slow pace of life, and the quirky characters who make up the town's staff. He quickly realizes that his new colleagues have hilarious personalities and unusual personal lives which are a significant part of their charm. The show takes a delicious spin on the fish-out-of-water trope and has excellent moments of humor, a perfect blend to the dramatic moments.
Nadine Garner portrays Dr. Knight's estranged wife, Penny, who refuses to understand his emotional turmoil and continually reminds him of all the sacrifices she made for him in their previous life. One of the main themes of the show is the reconciliation of their marriage. Penny is frequently juxtaposed with Knight's love interest, Eliza (played by Lucy Durack), the bubbly grade school teacher who catches Hugh's eye.
The primary focus, however, is the hospital, where Dr. Knight works as a GP to serve the rural communities. A significant star of the show is the landscape of the hospital, which is set atop a ridge overlooking an idyllic valley. The hospital is always busy, and there are plenty of diverse patients, each with a unique backstory.
Together with his co-workers, Dr. Knight tackles medical problems ranging from heart diseases, injuries from farming accidents, to mental health problems, and disputes that require unbiased mediations. Joel Tobeck and Belinda McClory are some of his colleagues who help him navigate through all the patients' needs, whether medical or emotional.
At the core of The Doctor is Knight's redemption arc. He may have left behind a career that made him a celebrity, but he soon realizes that his new role is more humbling and gratifying than he ever thought possible. His role at the hospital changes his character. He learns to care more and love those around him better. The audience identifies with Dr. Knight on his journey as he grapples with past demons and present failures, falls in love, and faces real-world challenges while tackling some of the most severe medical cases.
The show's strength is in its characters. The Doctor has an exceptional ensemble cast that appeals to a broad audience. It offers comedy, romance, and suspense with dashes of medical drama, all while delivering a meaty message of the challenges that face doctors in rural Australia, the cost of their work to their personal lives, and the importance of family and community support.
In conclusion, The Doctor is an excellent example of a show that has it all; charming and witty characters, an exciting plot, and inspiring storylines. The show's creator has flawlessly woven the medical genre into comedy and romance, which work perfectly together without being too overbearing. The beautiful landscape and creative sets transport the viewers to a picturesque rural town, making this show an irresistible package. If you're looking for a show that blends heart and humor excellently, then The Doctor is the prescription to your boredom.
