Rob and Laura are out for a drive when they witness a burglary at a local store. The thief makes a run for it and Rob chases him down, tackling him to the ground. Just when they think the ordeal is over, a police officer mistakes Rob for the robber and places him under arrest. While all of this is happening, Buddy and Sally are rehearsing for an upcoming show and are completely unaware of the chaos that has unfolded.
As Rob is taken to the police station, he tries to explain to the officers that he is not the burglar and that he simply tackled the man in an attempt to stop him. However, the officers do not believe him and Rob is booked and sent to a holding cell. Meanwhile, Laura rushes to the police station to help clear her husband's name. She quickly realizes that the officers are not taking her seriously either and decides to take matters into her own hands.
With the help of Buddy and Sally, Laura devises a plan to gather evidence that will prove Rob's innocence. They visit the store where the burglary took place and gather clues that point to the real culprit. They also interview other witnesses who confirm Rob's story. Armed with this evidence, Laura presents their findings to the police officers and demands that they release Rob immediately.
After a tense confrontation, the police finally agree to review the evidence and eventually come to the conclusion that Rob is innocent. He is released from custody and reunited with his wife, but the experience has left him shaken and angered. He realizes that even the most honest citizens can be falsely accused and mistreated by authorities.
The experience also leaves a lasting impression on Buddy and Sally, who incorporate the theme of justice into their upcoming show. The episode ends on a positive note as Rob and Laura reflect on the experience and appreciate their love for each other. The episode is a well-played mix of comedy and drama, and a testament to the talents of the cast and writers of The Dick Van Dyke Show.
