Rob Petrie, a comedy writer for a popular TV show, is having a nightmare in which he is losing his hair. When he wakes up and discovers that he is not bald, he is relieved, but soon finds himself faced with another problem - a pair of scissors stuck in his hair. As he tries to remove them, his wife Laura walks in and mistakes him for a mental patient. After some explanations, Laura finally agrees to help Rob remove the scissors from his hair. She succeeds, but Rob is left with a patch where the hair is missing.
The next day, Rob goes to the office with a hat on to hide the patch, and is immediately met with ridicule from his colleagues. They tease him mercilessly and make jokes about his patch. Feeling embarrassed and self-conscious, Rob decides to shave his head completely and go completely bald. Laura, however, is not so sure about this idea and tries to talk him out of it, but Rob is determined to go through with it.
Rob goes to a barbershop to have his head shaved, but is interrupted by a phone call from Laura. It turns out that she has discovered a way to solve his problem without shaving his head - a wig. She finds a wig that closely matches Rob's hair color and convinces him to try it on. Rob is reluctant, but once he sees himself in the mirror, he likes what he sees. He decides to wear the wig to work, even though he is unsure of how his colleagues will react.
At the office, Rob's colleagues are shocked to see him with a full head of hair. They are initially skeptical, but when Rob reveals that it is a wig, they are amazed at how realistic it looks. They praise him for his ingenuity and begin to treat him with respect again.
The episode ends with Rob and Laura going out for dinner, with Rob wearing his wig as he confidently walks through the restaurant. Laura tells him that she prefers him with hair, but Rob is still unsure whether he wants to keep the wig or go bald. The two agree to explore different options and to make a decision together.
This episode of The Dick Van Dyke Show explores issues of self-image and self-confidence, as Rob struggles with his appearance and how he is perceived by others. It also highlights the importance of supportive relationships, as Laura helps Rob to find a solution to his problem. Overall, the episode is a humorous and heartwarming look at a common problem that many people face.
