Rob Petrie, the head writer of the "Alan Brady Show," is selected as "Father of the Week" at his son Ritchie's school. At the weekly PTA meeting, Rob is praised for his achievements as a father and the principal asks him to speak at the Father's Day at the school.
Rob is excited by the honor, but he soon starts to feel pressure about making a good impression to the other parents. He begins to worry about his fathering skills and his approach to parenting when he learns that Ritchie's friend's father, a child psychologist, will be speaking at the same event.
In order to prepare himself, Rob reads several books on parenting, but he is still unsure of his abilities. He tries to talk to his colleagues at work about his fears, but they couldn't understand his problems. His wife Laura tries to convince him that he is a great father, but Rob remains unconvinced.
On the day of the Father's Day, Rob is still worried about his speech. He goes to a drugstore to pick up some note cards and is mistaken for a shoplifter by the store manager. The situation is resolved eventually but before leaving, Rob swallows his note cards by mistake instead of his aspirin.
When he gets to the school, he finds out that all the fathers are already good parents, and they were all just as nervous as he was. Rob starts to calm down and decides to make his speech without the note cards. He speaks about the importance of spending time with the family, playing games together and appreciating the simple things in life. His words strike a chord with the other fathers, who applaud him at the end of his speech.
After the event, Rob feels much better about himself and his abilities as a father. He realizes that being a good father is not about knowing everything, but about loving and caring for your family and being willing to learn and grow.
The episode ends with Rob and Laura returning home with Ritchie, happy and proud of Rob's speech.
