In The Deep season 2 episode 1, titled "From the Stars," the Nekton family returns to their underwater home, the Aronnax, after a long expedition. A highlight of their latest adventure was discovering an alien spacecraft at the bottom of the ocean. The episode begins with the thrilling footage of the Nektons lowering themselves from their submarine into the vastness of the deep sea.
One of the standout features of this episode is its stunning visuals. The animation in The Deep has always been high-quality, but the vastness of the ocean makes it difficult to fully capture its beauty. However, the series does an incredible job of creating an alien environment in one of the most alien places on Earth.
After returning to the Aronnax, the Nektons are greeted by their friends, who have been living on the ship for several months. The Nekton family includes Ant, Fontaine, Kaiko, and Will, who are all eager to explore the confines of their underwater world. We learn that Fontaine and Kaiko have been using the ship's state-of-the-art tech to study the aliens they discovered, and their findings have the potential to change how humanity sees itself.
Meanwhile, Will is preoccupied with his father. William Nekton, Sr. was lost at sea over a year ago and Will has been searching for him ever since. In the episode, we see how much the loss has affected Will, who is more focused than ever to solve the mystery surrounding his father's disappearance.
As the Nekton family settles back into their routine, they realize that someone has been stealing their supplies. At first, they think it's one of their own, but then they discover that a creature has been stealing from them. We learn that the creature is a giant octopus who has been attracted to the Nekton's ship because it contains an abundance of resources that are rare in the deep sea. The octopus is a fascinating character, with unpredictable tentacles and formidable strength.
After confronting the octopus, the Nektons discover that the creature is not the only thing in the deep sea that is preying on their ship. They are faced with a new adversary, the Guardians of Lemuria. The Guardians are a mysterious organization with unclear motives, but they seem to be opposed to the Nektons' exploration of the deep sea. Their arrival signals that the Nekton family's adventures will be more challenging than ever before.
Overall, The Deep season 2 episode 1 is an excellent start to the new season. It builds on the strengths established in the first season: a compelling family dynamic, gorgeous animation, and thrilling underwater adventures. The addition of the Guardians of Lemuria hints at larger plotlines to come, and the cliffhanger ending leaves us wanting more.
