The Deep is an animated television series that follows the adventures of the Nekton family, a group of underwater explorers who travel the world's oceans in search of undiscovered creatures and lost treasures. The show is based on a series of graphic novels by Tom Taylor and James Brouwer and premiered in 2015. Season 1, Episode 2 is titled "Dark Orca" and sees the Nektons encounter a mysterious pod of orcas.
The episode begins with the Nekton family exploring an underwater cave system. They come across a strange device that appears to be a form of submarine. They are surprised to find that it is a remnant of an ancient civilization that had gone extinct. Soon after, they are attacked by a group of orcas. These orcas are unlike any they have seen before, appearing to be larger and more aggressive. The Nektons manage to escape but are left with many questions about the orcas' origins.
The Nektons return to their ship, the Aronnax, to discuss what they have found. The Aronnax is a state-of-the-art submarine that serves as the base of operations for the Nekton family. The family is made up of Antaeus "Ant" Nekton, his wife Fontaine, and their two children, Jeffrey and Kaiko. They are accompanied by a crew of highly skilled technicians and scientists who help them in their missions.
While examining the footage from their underwater cameras, the Nektons notice something strange about the orcas. They appear to be emitting a strange sound that is causing disruptions in their equipment. They decide to track the orcas down to investigate further.
As they journey deeper into the ocean, the Nektons encounter a massive wall of rock that appears to have been artificially constructed. They discover that on the other side of the wall is a massive underwater facility. The facility is dark and abandoned, with no sign of life. Intrigued by the facility, the Nektons begin to explore.
As they explore the facility, the Nektons discover that it was once used by an ancient civilization. The facility is filled with strange machinery and artifacts that are unlike anything they have ever seen before. They also discover that the orcas they encountered earlier were a part of the ancient civilization's experiments. The orcas were genetically engineered to emit a sound that could be used to control the ancient civilization's technology.
The Nektons are stunned by what they have discovered. They realize that the ancient civilization was far more advanced than they had ever imagined. As they continue to explore the facility, they come across a dark corner where something seems to be lurking. They cautiously investigate and come face-to-face with one of the genetically modified orcas.
The orca is larger and more aggressive than any they have encountered before. It attacks them, causing chaos and destruction throughout the facility. The Nektons are forced to flee, but they manage to capture the orca so that they can study it further.
As they return to the Aronnax, the Nektons are left with many unanswered questions. What other secrets lie hidden in the depths of the ocean? Who were the ancient civilization that built the facility and what happened to them? And what will they do with the captive orca?
The episode ends with the Nektons returning to their ship, ready to continue their exploration of the world's oceans. They have encountered something truly remarkable in the form of the ancient facility, and they know that there are countless other wonders waiting to be discovered.
