- December 15, 2010
The Deep is an Australian-Canadian co-produced animated TV series that premiered on Netflix on June 1, 2016. The show follows the adventures of the Nekton family, a group of underwater explorers who live on a state-of-the-art submarine called the Aronnax. In each episode, the family takes on a new scientific expedition to explore the unknown depths of the ocean.
Episode three of season one is titled Ghosts of the Deep. In this episode, the Nekton family investigates a sunken pirate ship that is said to be cursed. The ship in question, the Neptune's Nest, sank over 200 years ago with all hands, including its captain, Mad Marcus. The legend goes that whoever disturbs the Neptune's Nest will suffer a terrible fate.
The team embarks on their mission, but as soon as they arrive near the Neptune's Nest, strange things start happening. First, their submarine, the Aronnax, starts malfunctioning, and they are forced to use their diving suits to explore the sunken ship. Once they are inside the Neptune's Nest, they discover that it's not empty, as they thought, but that there are ghostly figures moving around.
The Nektons are initially spooked, but they quickly realize that the "ghosts" are holographic images created by an old projector. The captain of the pirate ship, Mad Marcus, was a master of trickery, and he left behind all kinds of booby traps and tricks to scare off anyone who tried to steal his treasure.
The Nektons split up to search for the treasure, but they soon find themselves in trouble. First, Ant, the youngest member of the family, gets trapped in a room with a rising water level, and it's up to his sister, Fontaine, to save him. Meanwhile, their parents, William and Kaiko, are fighting off a group of octopuses that have been attracted by the treasure.
As the Nektons struggle to make it out of the Neptune's Nest before it's too late, they are suddenly confronted by a figure in a pirate hat and coat - the ghost of Mad Marcus himself. The family quickly realizes that the ghost is not real but is a projection created by one of Marcus's elaborate machines.
In the end, the Nektons manage to escape with the treasure, but not before narrowly avoiding several more traps that Mad Marcus had set up to protect his loot. They return to the Aronnax and are happy to discover that their sub has somehow repaired itself. They sail away from the cursed Neptune's Nest, leaving behind the ghostly pirate ship and its wily captain.
Overall, Ghosts of the Deep is an exciting and suspenseful episode of The Deep. It combines elements of adventure, danger, and a touch of the supernatural to create a thrilling story that will keep viewers on the edge of their seats. The Nekton family's teamwork and resourcefulness are put to the test in this episode, and they come out on top once again, proving that they are true underwater explorers.
