The Cosby Show season 4, episode 6 "That's Not What I Said" features the Huxtable family dealing with typical family struggles and misunderstandings. The episode begins with one of the younger Huxtable children, Vanessa, asking her parents if she can go to a party. Her parents, Cliff and Clair, begrudgingly give her permission as long as she promises to return home on time and not stay out too late.
As the family sits down for dinner, Theo, another one of the children, begins to tell a joke. However, Cliff and Clair misunderstand the punchline and begin to chide him for telling inappropriate jokes. Theo becomes frustrated with the misunderstanding and insists that they didn't understand the joke correctly, but Cliff and Clair continue to lecture him on appropriate behavior.
Meanwhile, Vanessa is at the party and enjoying herself when her friends suggest that they go to another party. Vanessa begins to feel unsure about going to the second party, but her friends pressure her into going. When she arrives at the second party, she realizes that it's much more crowded and wild than the first party and becomes uncomfortable. She tries to contact her parents to come pick her up, but the party is too loud for her to hear the phone ringing.
Back at home, Cliff and Clair are still debating with Theo about appropriate behavior. Theo becomes more frustrated and angry as they continue to misunderstand him. Eventually, they realize their mistake and apologize to Theo, but he is hurt and angry that they didn't trust him in the first place.
As the night goes on, Vanessa becomes more and more uncomfortable at the party and decides to leave. She tries to get home on her own but gets lost in the process. Meanwhile, her parents receive a message from one of her friends that she left the party and begin to worry when they can't reach her by phone.
Eventually, Vanessa is found by a police officer and brought back to her parents' home. When she arrives, she's upset and frightened by her experience but relieved to be home. She tells her parents what happened, and they comfort her and discuss how they can better communicate with each other in the future.
The episode ends with the family reflecting on the importance of being clear with each other and understanding one another's perspectives. It's a touching reminder that even the most loving families can have misunderstandings and that open communication is essential in any relationship. Overall, "That's Not What I Said" is a heartwarming and relatable episode of The Cosby Show that explores the importance of communication and understanding in families.
