In Custody, the third episode of season six of The Closer, follows Deputy Chief Brenda Leigh Johnson and her team as they investigate the murder of a woman whose body is found in the trunk of a stolen car. The woman, Karen, was a former drug addict who had recently turned her life around and was trying to get her granddaughter, Emily, back from foster care.
As Brenda and her team begin to unravel the case, they discover that Karen had been working as an informant for the police and had been providing them with information about the local drug trade. They also learn that Karen had recently been arrested for drug possession and was being held in jail when she was murdered.
The investigation leads the team to the jail where Karen was being held, and they discover that she had been placed in a cell with a known drug dealer who had a motive to kill her. As they try to get the drug dealer to confess, they also have to deal with a prison guard who seems to be obstructing their investigation.
Meanwhile, Brenda has to deal with a personal crisis as her parents visit from Georgia and she tries to hide her relationship with her FBI boyfriend, Fritz. She also has to deal with the fallout from a previous case where a suspect was freed due to a technicality.
As the investigation into Karen's murder continues, Brenda and her team race against time to bring the killer to justice and reunite Emily with her grandmother's extended family.
In Custody is a gripping episode that showcases the procedural elements of The Closer while also delving into the personal lives of the characters. It's a great example of how the show balances the crime-solving with the human emotions behind it all.
