The Case That Haunts Me season three, episode two is titled "The Evil Fantasy - Part 2." The episode takes place in 1997 and begins with a woman named Emily, who is brutally attacked and left for dead in her apartment. At the hospital, she tells the police she was attacked by a man wearing a ski mask and wielding a knife.
Detective Mike Arntfield, who worked the case at the time, is brought back in to re-examine the evidence. He believes the perpetrator may have been someone close to Emily, as there were suggestions of a stalker in the days leading up to the attack. Detective Arntfield interviews Emily's ex-boyfriend and friends, trying to pinpoint a suspect.
The episode then shifts to the present day, where Detective Arntfield presents the case to true crime author and podcast host, Rachel Arntfield (his daughter). Rachel delves into Emily's backstory and personality type and begins to unravel troubling information about a "fantasy world" that Emily had created for herself.
The episode examines the role of technology in the investigation, in particular, the advances in DNA technology that occurred over the 20 years since the crime was committed. Detective Arntfield works with the current lead detective, using new DNA evidence to try and track down the attacker.
As the episode progresses, it becomes increasingly clear that the case is far more complex than originally believed. New evidence comes to light, and Rachel uncovers shocking information about Emily's past and the role it may have played in her attack.
As "The Evil Fantasy - Part 2" draws to a close, the investigation takes a dramatic turn, leaving viewers on the edge of their seats as Detective Arntfield and his team race to catch the perpetrator before it's too late.
