The Bold Type season 4 opens with a new episode titled Legends Of The Fall Issue, where our favorite trio of power ladies - Jane, Sutton, and Kat - are back to NYC after their French escapades. The girls come back to find some major changes in their respective lives.
Jane is now a full-time writer at Scarlet, and she's tasked with covering a groundbreaking technology piece. Sutton is living her dream job as a fashion assistant, but her relationship with Richard is now long-distance, which puts a strain on their relationship. Kat is back at Scarlet, but her job isn't the same anymore. She's rejected by Jacqueline for the in-house social media position, and she finds solace in her new side gig, throwing events for the city council candidate, Tia.
As their lives are changing, so is the world around them. A #MeToo scandal hits Scarlet, putting the magazine's values in question. Jacqueline, feeling the weight of power dynamics, decides to have a neutral third party come into the office to access their culture, which causes a stir with the staff, including our lead girls.
The Legend Of The Fall Issue takes us through the effects of the scandal, with the girls gathering as a support system to each other, and the decisions they make to stand behind their beliefs. Jane is torn whether to cover the scandal or to follow her peers' actions and stay quiet. Kat's newfound cause takes her to the streets with Tia by her side, protesting the candidate's oppositions against reproductive rights.
Meanwhile, Sutton's conflict between her love and career takes a turn when Richard comes to visit, but the change is not what she expects, causing her to reevaluate whether she should continue in NYC or follow Richard's dream job across the country.
The episode tackles heavy issues - the #MeToo movement, feminism, and the responsibility of media - and handles them with grace and sensitivity. While the show has always been a proponent of female empowerment, the fourth season seems to take a more pointed approach, not shying away from tough conversations. It proves that there's always room for growth and reflection, even for a show that champions strong women.
The Bold Type is as visually stunning as ever, from the fashion to the sets, but it's the performances of its main cast that continue to draw us in. The trio's chemistry as best friends is palpable, giving us a glimpse of the camaraderie we all want in our lives.
The Legend Of The Fall Issue is a perfect start to the new season, promising a literal and emotional rollercoaster as we watch our leading ladies navigate their new pathways.
