Bob Hartley, the psychologist in Chicago, is in trouble when his office is robbed. After the robbery, Bob is convinced that his patient is behind the entire act. However, no one believes him as his patient is an alleged ex-convict and a recovering alcoholic.
Bob and Emily, his wife, start to investigate and find out that someone impersonated his patient and stole some confidential files. This leads to Bob being accused of malpractice by his patients. He is certain that if he can find the files, everything will be alright.
Emily steps in to help Bob investigate and they are led to a seedy hotel. There, they find the man who stole the files. Things get complicated when the man dies before Bob can question him. Bob and Emily must figure out who killed the man and why he wanted the files.
Their investigation leads them to another ex-con who has been trying to start over a new life. He reveals that the files contained information about criminal activities and he wanted them to be destroyed so that he could move on from his past.
With this revelation, Bob realizes that his patient had no involvement in the robbery. If anything, he was only trying to help and had even tracked down the real thief. Bob and Emily speak to the police and clear Bob's name.
The episode ends with Bob and Emily reconnecting after the stressful experience and realizing how much they mean to each other.
