In The Big Bang Theory season 4 episode 1, titled "The Robotic Manipulation," the gang is back and it seems like things are picking up right where they left off. Sheldon, who is still relatively inexperienced in the world of dating, decides to create a dating profile in order to find a compatible partner for himself. He enlists the help of his friends to create the perfect profile, but soon finds himself in over his head.
Meanwhile, Howard meets a new girl named Bernadette who he really likes. Bernadette seems to be his perfect match, but there's one catch. She wants nothing to do with Howard's mother, who is a controlling and overbearing woman that drives Howard crazy. Howard tries to keep his relationship with Bernadette a secret from his mother, but as always, things don't go according to plan.
As Sheldon delves deeper into the world of online dating, he discovers that he's not as good at it as he initially thought. He starts to get nervous and begins to doubt himself, but his friends assure him that everything will work out in the end. However, once he starts to interact with a potential match, he discovers that he's out of his depth.
While all of this is going on, Bernadette is becoming increasingly uncomfortable with Howard's relationship with his mother. She tries to convince him to stand up to her, but Howard is hesitant. Eventually, he decides that he needs to tell his mother about Bernadette, but things don't go as planned. His mother becomes upset and commands Howard to end the relationship, but he refuses.
The episode concludes with Sheldon's online attempts at finding love coming to an interesting end, and Howard and Bernadette's relationship facing some serious obstacles. The gang learns that love can be complicated, but it's always worth pursuing.
