Sheldon, Leonard, Howard, and Raj are all avid collectors of comic books and action figures. When Sheldon learns that a recently deceased comic book store owner had some rare and valuable items in his collection, he jumps at the chance to acquire them for himself. He convinces the others to pool their money and place a bid on the collection, but they soon discover that they have competition from Stuart, the owner of the local comic book store.
As they try to outbid Stuart, they also have to deal with a visit from Barry Kripke, a fellow scientist who is known for his annoying speech impediment. Kripke expresses interest in the comic book collection and even offers to go in on the bidding with them, but Sheldon is hesitant to let him in on the deal.
Meanwhile, Penny is trying to start her own business as a hair stylist, but she is struggling to find clients. When she manages to get her first customer, she is reminded why she left the beauty industry in the first place. She also receives some helpful advice from Bernadette, who runs her own successful business.
As the bidding war for the comic book collection heats up, tensions rise between the friends and they begin to question whether the collection is worth the amount they are bidding. In the end, they are left to face the consequences of their actions and decide whether the Excelsior Acquisition was worth it.
