Sheldon, the insufferable genius, is determined to make friends in his peculiar way. In this episode, he sets out to devise an algorithm that will help him find friends. His quest leads him to analyze the social interactions of the people around him, like a scientist constructing an experiment.
But the first hurdle that Sheldon encounters is finding a suitable test subject. His gaze falls upon his lab partner at work, Kripke. Kripke happens to share a disdain for their boss, Dr. Pemberton, which Sheldon sees as a promising bonding opportunity. Sheldon quickly sets out to arrange a social encounter between them, but trouble arises when Kripke begins to outsmart him.
Sheldon's friendship algorithm is thrown into disarray as Kripke repeatedly undermines his efforts. Sheldon's frustration mounts when he realizes that he has unintentionally used a pickup artist's tactics for making friends. In his desperation, Sheldon turns to Penny, for advice on how to make friends. Penny is bemused as Sheldon tells her of his algorithmic approach to friendship and starts to teach him the basics of socializing.
Meanwhile, Howard and Raj are trying to impress a beautiful girl named Abby, who Howard has hired as a part-time assistant in the hope that he might make a romantic connection. When they can't think of anything to talk about with Abby, they enlist the help of Sheldon's algorithm, only to find that the formula doesn't work.
Back at the lab, Sheldon is beginning to doubt that he can make friends using his algorithm, but after some tinkering, he believes he has cracked the problem. He encounters a stranger at the comic book store and regards him as his ideal test subject. Despite the stranger’s puzzlement with Sheldon’s anachronistic approach, Sheldon thinks that he's making headway and envisions a friendship with his test subject, but things don't go according to plan.
Meanwhile, Howard and Raj get an unexpected visit from Abby, which throws them into a state of panic. They attempt to impress her with their scientific knowledge, but it all ends in disaster when they accidentally break an experimental rocket.
As the episode draws to a close, Sheldon realizes that his algorithm doesn't work. He is dejected and walks back to his apartment. In a moment of reflection, Sheldon realizes that his journey to make friends may be selfish and that he should stop trying to control the process. In a touching finale, he opens himself up and apologizes to Kripke, bringing Sheldon and Kripke closer than ever.
