The Beverly Hillbillies season 2 episode 20 titled "Lafe Returns" follows the antics of the Clampett family as they welcome the return of their good friend and neighbor, Lafe Crick. The episode begins with Lafe coming back to Beverly Hills after a long stay in his hometown, and realizing that a lot has changed since he was last around. Upon his return, he is surprised to see the Clampetts living in a luxurious mansion, thanks to their oil fortune.
As Lafe gets reintroduced to the family, he interacts with each member, and we get to see their unique personalities and lifestyles. Jed, the head of the family, is still simple-minded and kind as ever, and his daughter Elly May, who is a tomboy at heart, is as spry and active as ever. Granny, the family’s matriarch, is still doing what she does best - cooking and meddling in her family's affairs. And then there’s Jethro, Jed’s cousin, who is always trying to show off his intelligence and talent, which usually ends up causing more problems than he solves.
The episode takes a comical turn when Lafe announces that he has decided to invest in the oil business, just like the Clampetts. However, he realizes that he has no experience or knowledge about the business, which leads Jethro to offer his services as a mentor. Jethro, who has always seen himself as the smartest member of the family, is excited to show off his business skills, but his foolishness leads to one mishap after another. As Jethro continues to teach Lafe about the oil business, he also gets him involved in a series of comical situations, from accidentally starting a fire while testing out a new drilling technique, to narrowly escaping jail time for violating local laws.
Meanwhile, Elly May is dealing with her own set of problems, as she tries to convince her father that she needs a new car. She believes that a sports car would be a perfect fit for her adventurous lifestyle, but Jed disagrees, saying that she needs something more practical and safe. Elly May, who never takes no for an answer, decides to take matters into her own hands and goes on a wild ride through the hills of Beverly with Lafe, Jethro, and her beloved dogs. The episode ends with a hilarious scene where Elly May finally gets her wish, but not in the way she expected.
Overall, "Lafe Returns" is a delightful episode that showcases the charming personalities of the Clampetts. It's a reminder that no matter how rich and successful they become, they never forget their humble beginnings, and always stick together as a family. With its humorous plots, comical mishaps, and colorful characters, this episode is sure to bring a smile to anyone's face.
