Lucy is up to her usual mischievous antics in season 2, episode 19 of The Best of I Love Lucy. In this episode entitled "Ricky's Old Girlfriend," things get complicated when a blast from Ricky's past arrives in town.
Ricky's ex-girlfriend, movie star Gloria DeHaven, comes to visit the Ricardo's in New York City. Lucy is immediately intimidated by the Hollywood star and begins to feel insecure about her own relationship with Ricky.
As Ricky and Gloria reminisce about old times, Lucy begins to feel left out and decides to try and ingratiate herself with Gloria in order to make Ricky jealous. She exaggerates her own talents and even goes so far as to put on a fake Southern accent in an attempt to impress Gloria.
Meanwhile, Ethel and Fred are tired of Lucy's antics and decide to have a little fun of their own. They pretend to be rich and famous in order to impress Gloria, but it quickly backfires when Gloria discovers their true identities.
As Lucy's jealousy and insecurity reach a boiling point, she devises a plan to get rid of Gloria by encouraging her to leave town and return to Hollywood. However, her plan ultimately fails when Ricky's love and devotion for Lucy shines through and Gloria realizes there's no competition for his heart.
In typical I Love Lucy fashion, the episode is filled with hilarious moments and comedic misunderstandings. Lucy's over-the-top attempts to impress Gloria are particularly entertaining, and the dynamic between the four main characters is as strong as ever.
Overall, "Ricky's Old Girlfriend" is a classic episode of I Love Lucy that highlights the show's unmatched sense of humor and heart. Anyone who loves classic comedy is sure to enjoy this episode and the entire second season of The Best of I Love Lucy.
