The Bernie Mac Show was a television sitcom that aired on FOX from 2001 to 2006. The show followed the life of comedian Bernie Mac as he struggled to raise his sister's three children in his home. In season 3, episode 12, titled "Saving Sergeant Tompkins," Bernie takes on a challenge to help out a local army recruiter who is struggling to bring in new recruits.
The episode begins with Jordan and Bryana trying to convince Bernie to let them go to a hot new club in the city. Bernie is not thrilled about the idea, but he eventually agrees to take them with him for a night out on the town. Meanwhile, Bernie is contacted by Sergeant Tompkins, an army recruiter who is having trouble reaching his quota for the month. Bernie agrees to help Sergeant Tompkins in exchange for a favor.
Bernie's plan is to host a party at his house and invite a group of high school students to come and meet Sergeant Tompkins. The hope is that the students will be eager to join the army after hearing about all the benefits that come with it. Bernie's plan seems to be working until a rival recruiter named Sergeant Watson shows up and tries to sabotage the event.
Sergeant Watson is convinced that he is the better recruiter and will do whatever it takes to steal Sergeant Tompkins' potential recruits. Bernie is not happy about Sergeant Watson's behavior and decides to take matters into his own hands. After a heated argument, Bernie challenges Sergeant Watson to a push-up contest to determine the better recruiter.
The push-up contest begins, and Bernie and Sergeant Watson are neck and neck. However, Bernie starts to falter, and it looks like Sergeant Watson is going to win. That is until Bernie pulls a surprising move and pulls out a bag of donuts which distracts Sergeant Watson causing him to lose focus and Bernie to win the contest.
Despite Bernie's victory, Sergeant Watson is still determined to prove he is the better recruiter. Bernie decides to take a different approach and invites both Sergeant Watson and Sergeant Tompkins to his home for a friendly game of poker. As the night goes on, the two recruiters start to open up and gain a better understanding of each other as colleagues.
Eventually, the night ends on a positive note, with both Sergeant Watson and Sergeant Tompkins agreeing that they are both excellent recruiters in their own ways. Bernie realizes that teamwork and a positive attitude can go a long way in achieving success.
