The Bernie Mac Show season 1 episode 14, titled "Back in the Day," takes a walk down memory lane with Bernie Mac as he reminisces about his childhood. The episode starts with Bernie telling Jordan and Bryana about his school years, including his crush on a girl named Wanda who was the most beautiful girl in his class. In an effort to impress her, Bernie decided to join the track team. However, he found out that he was not a natural athlete and was unable to keep up with the other runners.
Bernie's disappointment was palpable as he described how he couldn't make Wanda notice him. However, in the present day, Wanda reaches out to Bernie on social media, and Bernie is ecstatic to have a chance to reconnect with his childhood crush. Jordan and Bryana are both surprised that Bernie was once a love-struck teenager, and they can't wait to meet Wanda.
Meanwhile, Vanessa and Wanda meet and catch up, revealing that they were best friends in high school. Vanessa learns that Wanda is still single and tries to set her up with Bernie. She invites Wanda to come to dinner, promising her that Bernie is the perfect match for her.
At dinner, Bernie is nervous and excited to see Wanda again after all these years, but Wanda seems less interested in Bernie and more concerned about catching up with Vanessa. Bernie tries to impress Wanda by telling her stories about his childhood and his years on the track team. However, Wanda seems more interested in talking to Vanessa about her life.
Feeling ignored, Bernie decides to leave the table and go for a walk. Jordan and Bryana follow him and try to cheer him up. They remind him that he is still a cool dude and that he doesn't need Wanda to validate him. Bernie then has a heart-to-heart conversation with Jordan and Bryana sharing how his past experiences still affect him and makes it challenging for him to interact with Wanda.
In the end, Vanessa and Wanda have a heart-to-heart about why Wanda is not interested in Bernie. Vanessa then breaks the news to Bernie, which he takes surprisingly well. Bernie thanks Vanessa for trying to set him up with Wanda, but he understands that they just weren't meant to be.
The episode ends with Bernie taking Jordan and Bryana out for ice cream, reinforcing the Lesson from the show that It's ok to explore your past but not get stuck in it, always look for ways to make new memories.
