As the third season of The Batman begins, we are introduced to a new character- Batgirl. The opening episode of the season is titled Batgirl Begins (1) and it kicks off with a bang. The episode opens with Barbara Gordon, the Commissioner Gordon’s daughter, being kidnapped by the notorious villain Firefly.
As Batgirl’s origin story begins to unfold, we learn that she has been secretly training herself to become Gotham’s newest vigilante. She is determined to take on criminals and keep the streets safe. Batgirl has spent countless hours perfecting her martial arts and acrobatic skills, all while remaining completely under the radar of her father and his colleagues in the Gotham City Police Department.
When Firefly kidnaps Barbara, she is faced with a daunting challenge. She must use all of her newly acquired skills to rescue herself and take down the villain- all while keeping her true identity a secret. Of course, the dynamic duo of Batman and Robin are soon on the scene to lend a hand. Together, the trio must race against the clock to stop Firefly’s diabolical plot before it’s too late.
Throughout the episode, we get a glimpse into the personal lives of the characters we’ve grown to love. The relationships between Batman, Robin, and Commissioner Gordon are explored in greater depth than ever before. We see how much these characters care about each other and how difficult it can be to balance the need to protect Gotham with the need to protect their personal lives.
But at the heart of the episode is Barbara’s transformation into Batgirl. We watch as she struggles to find her place in the world and come to terms with her own limitations. We see the determination and grit that she possesses as she faces down her fears and takes on Firefly. This is a character who is more than capable of holding her own in the world of Gotham’s vigilantes.
